MelissaStuff – One Year Birthday!

One year ago today, I decided to convert my personal blog into what is currently the MelissaStuff we have all come to know and hopefully love.

If you haven’t heard the story about how I got started . . . my husband and I went on a mission trip with our youth group to Africa together. Shortly after coming back, I spoke to our local MOPS group about saving money and using the extra to help others. Many of the ladies requested that I send them the deals I used to save money, and I started by sending lots of group emails.

Soon my email server started complaining about how many emails I was sending and then started shutting down my access. The only thing I could think of was to use my previously personal blog and post the deals there.

I never dreamed in a year I would go from less than 50 interested friends and acquaintances to over 1000 subscribers and followers. I have met so many wonderful people and learned an enormous amount about marketing, blogging and social networking. I am not rolling in the dough, but I have enjoyed some fun perks already.

Let’s take a quick rearview glance . . .

I can’t wait to see where the next year takes MelissaStuff. I have an exciting trip to my first blog conference coming up in April and some fun giveaways in the works . . . who knows what else will come up.

Not too long ago, I told you about my experience with Tropical Traditions organic coconut oil . Tropical Traditions was gracious enough to giveaway a bottle of that oil to one of the MelissaStuff readers. Recently, they offered to send me their palm shortening to try out. I love to bake so I was all about that offer. I was surprised when the “sample” arrived and it was a 1 gallon pail of shortening. I’m pretty sure that’s enough to make cookies for the next decade or so! Fair warning – when you go to use this for the first time, know that it will be difficult to get the lid off and if you aren’t particularly handy, you might want to have someone else around to help you. Organic Detergent? {Giveaway}

So technically, I don’t think this detergent is actually organic, but it is non-toxic and environmentally safe. Can you say that for your detergent? This product was a surprise to me. I’m not picky about my detergent, but the only thing I do care about is how my detergent smells. Before I used Tropical Traditions Powdered Laundry Detergent I was concerned that it would have a chemical smell or worse the clothes would end up not smelling clean. But it smells GREAT without having any specific scent to it . . . it just smells clean . {EXPIRED} Giveaway: Make Your Own Soda (Cokes!)

I have to admit that this review was one of the most FUN items we’ve done so far. My husband was actually more excited about trying it out than I was. Sodastream has an entire line of machines that allow you to make your own soda -  pop, cokes, whatever you make call it - at home. The process is super simple. We reviewed the Jet. It came in a large box. We took all of the pieces out and were able to start making drinks without washing or assembling anything. (We did rinse out the bottle just because I’m a nut like that.) There are two clear bottles to mix the drinks in, an O2 cylinder and the actual machine. You pop the O2 cylinder into the back of the machine. Then fill up one of the bottles with water to the fill line marked on the bottle. You push back on the button at the top of the front of the Sodastream machine which rocks out the Piece that the bottle screws on to.
