How to Keep Your Kids from Getting Sick this Time of Year

Pneumonia. The Flu. Bronchitis. Strep Throat.
{sigh} It's that time of year. Everyone is getting sick. Kids are out of school for one thing or another and then they go back just in time to catch the next round of illness. Or at least that's the way I felt year after year.
But in the last few years, we have made a couple of changes that have really changed that cycle for us. 1.) We started using Thieves - Young Living Essential Oil in the house regularly and 2.) We make sure all of our boys get their flu shot. This year, they were able to go to Legacy ER and Urgent Care to get their shots. The wait was short. The attractive firefighter who gave the their shots did an incredible job and not one of them cried! How amazing is that?
The Allen location was the easiest access for our crew, but there are also locations in McKinney, Frisco, North Richland Hills, Coppell and the most recent opening in Keller. That makes it the nation’s largest stand-alone provider to offer both urgent care and emergency room services under one roof.
They are even doing a fun, grand opening event at the Keller location on Oct. 31st from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

While we're on the topic, let's chat about the different between an ER and an Urgent Care. Most of the time, we think Urgent Care is a clinic with extended hours and part-time doctors working extra shifts after their own office hours. You get shots, prescriptions and simple wound care at them. On the other hand, the ER is the red sign on the hospital where you go when there are no other options, you may need to be hospitalized or you don't have insurance.
Not too long ago, I had a rough visit at a different local urgent care/ER facility. We had been on a trip. I started feeling REALLY sick, and I don't get sick very often. So we pulled back into the DFW Metroplex about 5 p.m. on a Sunday night. First stop was CVS Minute Clinic but it was so close to closing they wouldn't take a new patient. So our next stop was an Urgent Care clinic close to where we used to live. When I walked in, they told me that because it was Sunday after 5 p.m. the visit would be classified as an ER visit rather than an Urgent Care visit. I was so miserable - I couldn't even swallow without razorblades and almost hyperventilating from pain. I agreed to anything if they would just help me. But, in the end, they did exactly what I would expect from any clinic. They examined me, took some numbers like blood pressure and temperature, gave me a shot and a prescription and sent me home. But the bill was utterly ridiculous . . . THOUSANDS of dollars for just a regular office visit that happened to occur after 5 p.m. on a Sunday.
Legacy is great because they have all of the emergency equipment on site if it's needed, but you only pay for an ER visit when you actually need EMERGENCY care and not when you just need simple clinic assistance with an illness. Urgent care clinics aren't even required to have a doctor on staff; frequently, you deal with a physician's assistant or nurse practitioner. At Legacy, you will find board-certified, emergency-trained doctors with 10+ years of experience who will handle a whole range of medical issues, from the mundane to the extreme.
It's great to have somewhere to go where you don't have to have an appointment, you can check-in online in order to avoid paperwork at arrival, and frequently wait 5 minutes or less . . . many people are in and out in less than 30 minutes.
I'm grateful to have an option that I feel good about taking my kids to. Too many times, it seems like their illnesses or accidents happen after hours or on the weekends when the doctor's office just isn't an option. Now I know where I can go anytime 24/7 - And I know it won't be considered an emergency unless it's truly an emergency or after 9 p.m. With Legacy, I won't have to worry about it costing me an arm and a leg when it just needs a simple prescription!
