Makes Momma a Little Happier

And, no, I’m not talking about Momma’s Little Helpers or any kind of special drink.

I’m talking about having three boys . . . and a husband who broke multiple bones trying to do tricks on his skateboard and still sports a crooked nose to prove it.

In general I feel like a pretty laid back mom. I hurt when my boys hurt, but I don’t want to prevent them from doing all the little things boys dream of and it seems most, if not all, of those involve a certain level of danger.

October 074So when we went somewhere recently and my boys sat in rapt attention just like this the whole time, I knew we had found something they would enjoy doing.

And it involved half-pipes, ramps and high speeds. Skateboarding is a little too much for this momma still and we live in Texas so snowboarding is out. But there’s a new thing in these parts called wakeboarding!

October 071

It’s based on the same concepts as skateboarding or snowboarding, but it’s on water. At the new Hydrous Wavepark in Allen has a rope and pulley system that tows the rider around the course. By leaning, transferring their weight and leveraging the rope to their advantage, riders are able to do flips, grinds and stunts that are downright amazing.

This momma feels a little bit better about her boys learning to grind the rails, flip in the air and contort their bodies in strange ways when there is water to cushion their learning curve and a little extra grace for their mistakes.

We had been invited to attend the ribbon cutting for the Hydrous Wave park and we came away with a newfound passion. My boys can’t wait to go back and try their own hand at it. Children as young as five do it on a regular basis, and grown men find it challenging enough to spend hours honing their skills.

We’re hoping to go back and try it out sometime before too much time passes. Right now, you can go to the park - for $25 you get two hours of wakeboarding with full equipment rental. That’s a great price and I would imagine it’s going to go up as we head towards next summer and more people find out about this crazy fun activity literally in our backyard.
