Nursery Budgets: Starting with What You Have

So, in the introduction to this short series, I told you why I was creating a nursery, what my first nursery looked like and how important it was to me to do exactly what I wanted this time . . . but still stay economical.

The first step in that process for me was starting with what I had. Having a 2 year old and a 4 year old, I had already purchased a crib, a baby armoire and a bookshelf. Even new to me these items were purchased frugally. The crib was a second hand purchase from an antique store in downtown Mckinney. Due to recalls and changes in cribs, I did have to make sure the slats were close enough together and the paint recent enough to not possibly contain lead. The crib passed both of these tests and my parents purchased it before my first son was born for about $185.  Considering the heavy duty design and the custom paint, I think that we got a GREAT deal.

However, headed into this newest nursery I also knew that I could try to paint the bed - which we were decidedly unsure of - or make sure I incorporated this BLUE crib into the color scheme.

Another item that we already had was the baby armoire. I never would have dreamed I would have purchased this item, but we found it at in an extremely nice neighborhood in North Dallas while attending an estate sale. We waited for the halfprice sale and purchased it at $15 because it was in the garage and needed a new coat of paint. The chest is solid wood and made well! I would have paid a fortune for it at a retail store and my kids would have marked it up just like it was when we got it.

But, I knew the bright colors we used the first time around were not what I wanted for this new nursery. So I knew that this piece was going to need at least a change of paint.

I also had a bookshelf that I had purchased for my old office. It was plain, black and sat low to the ground so I wouldn't have to worry about it getting pulled over on the kids.

These three basics were the beginning of what I had to build a new nursery around, and my next challenge was to find a color scheme that could encompass a blue bed, a black bookshelf and something baby-like!
